Ukraine Strikes Deep into Russia, Targeting Military Bases

Ukraine launched a large drone attack inside Russia. The attack aimed to damage Russian jets and airbases. This happened as both countries were planning to meet in Istanbul to discuss a possible ceasefire.

Operation Spider’s Web

The attack, called "Operation Spider’s Web," was carried out by Ukraine’s security service (SBU). It targeted four airbases in what could be the most damaging drone strike of the war.

A source within the SBU confirmed the strike. They said that "Enemy strategic bombers are burning en masse in Russia."

Key Targets of the Drone Strikes

The drone strikes hit several important military locations deep inside Russia:

  • Blaya Air Base (Siberia): This base is a key military airfield. It hosts the 444th and 200th heavy bomber aviation regiments. These regiments operate the TU22 M3 aircraft. The 181st Independent Composite Aviation Squadron, with A12 and A30 planes, is also located here.
  • Oenia Naval Base (Arctic): Thick black smoke was seen rising above this base. The Oenia Goober naval base is the main military intelligence center. It is in charge of seabed warfare and cable disruption. It is staffed with personnel from the 29th separate submarine division of the navy.
  • Dilevo Air Base (South of Moscow): This air base hosts the 43rd Center for Combat Training. It houses TU22 M3TU 95MS, and TU134 UBL aircraft. It also has AN-26 aircraft, EL78 tanker planes, and a repair plant.
  • Ivanovo Airfield (Northeast of Moscow): This air base can receive large planes. This includes the A50 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) plane.
  • Severo-Morsk Naval Base: The city hosts the largest base of Russian nuclear submarines.
  • Russian Response

Russia said that several military aircraft caught fire in the strikes. They also said that some suspects were arrested after the attack on its nuclear bombers.

Russia's defense ministry claimed that all attacks on the airfields were stopped. They called Ukraine's actions a terrorist attack using drones. They said the drones targeted airfields in Murmansk, Kursk, Kaluga, Ryazan, and Pskov regions.

  • Other Attacks

Other attacks also took place. Two Russian rail networks were targeted. These attacks derailed trains, destroyed bridges, and killed at least seven people.

The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 472 drones overnight. This is the highest likely total of the war so far. Russia also launched seven missiles.

  • Conclusion

The Ukrainian drone strikes deep inside Russia mark a significant escalation in the conflict. The attacks targeted key military bases and caused damage to strategic aircraft. Russia has responded by accusing Ukraine of terrorism and claiming to have stopped the attacks. As the conflict continues, the risk of further escalation remains high.
