Turkey's Growing Power in the Arms Trade

Turkey is becoming a bigger player in the global arms market. The country is working hard to build up its defense abilities. An international arms show recently took place in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city.

Turkey is showing off new, advanced systems. One example is the Typhoon Block 4, a long-range missile. It can hit targets over 1,000 kilometers away. This missile is meant to be a strong defense for the Turkish military.

Western arms limits in the past have pushed Turkey to make its own weapons. This was especially true after the 1974 Cyprus operation.

Dealing with Modern Threats

Today's world has new dangers. These include:

  • Armed groups that are not part of a government
  • Terrorist groups
  • Terrorist groups supported by countries

To fight these threats, Turkey needs strong systems for:

  • Watching and gathering information
  • Electronic fighting
  • Using unmanned and automatic systems

In July, Turkey said it would increase its missile supply. This was to create a strong defense against instability in the area. This happened as Israel launched attacks on Iran and Syria.

Soon after, Turkey started using its own Steel Dome system. This system defends against air attacks in layers. It is similar to Israel's Iron Dome.

For Turkey, these missiles, launchers, and defense products mean more than just equipment. They represent:

  • Being independent
  • Resisting limits
  • Turkey's growing role in the global defense market

Turkey has become a major seller of weapons. Its yearly sales have gone up to over $7 billion. This is a big jump from under $2 billion in 2007. Sales have increased sharply since 2021.

The Rise of Turkish Drones

This change has led to a greater demand for Turkish-made drones. These drones are popular because they offer good performance for the price.

As warfare changes, countries must adapt. They need to reshape their plans to get:

  • Air defense
  • Unmanned and automatic systems

New choices are appearing, each with different costs, abilities, and effects on global politics.

Turkey's defense industry is growing. It is developing advanced weapons and becoming a key player in the global arms trade. This growth is driven by a need for independence, a response to modern threats, and a desire to protect its interests.
