Pakistan Challenges Israel's Actions
During the emergency session, Pakistan's representative took the floor to respond to statements made by Israel.
Pakistan strongly rejected Israel's claims, calling them "unacceptable" and "ludicrous." The Pakistani representative stated that Israel, as an "aggressor, an occupier, a serial violator of UN charter and international law," was misusing the Council chamber.
Pakistan accused Israel of making baseless claims to hide its own illegal actions and violations of international law.
The representative noted that Israel often plays the victim, even though it is the aggressor. Pakistan pointed out that Israel often ignores advice, even from its allies, and threatens:
- Members of the international community
- International media
- Human rights groups
- The International Court of Justice (ICJ)
- The International Criminal Court (ICC)
- The UN and its top officials
These actions, Pakistan argued, happen with no punishment. This, they said, is because some nations repeatedly support Israel's illegal acts.
A History of Disregard
Pakistan highlighted that the Security Council has spent decades discussing the Middle East and the Palestinian issue.
These long debates, Pakistan explained, are due to Israel's refusal to end its occupation and its continuous violations of Council resolutions.
Pakistan also addressed Israel's attempt to bring up an unrelated incident involving Pakistan. Israel used this to try and justify its own illegal actions. Pakistan stated that its position on that specific incident is clear and publicly known.
Pakistan's Fight Against Terrorism
Pakistan emphasized its key role and sacrifices in the global fight against terrorism.
The country pointed out that the entire world, including its partners, knows that Al-Qaeda was largely destroyed because of Pakistan's efforts. Pakistan remains dedicated to this global fight.
The representative firmly rejected any "insinuations from an irresponsible rogue state."
Pakistan called Israel the "perpetrator of the worst kind of state terrorism" seen in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories for many years. Pakistan also rejected any false comparisons, a stance also echoed by Qatar.
The Security Council's Unanimous Statement
Pakistan's representative then read aloud a statement that the Security Council had unanimously adopted.
This statement, while perhaps not as strong as some wished, showed a united stance from the Council members.
The key points of the Security Council's statement included:
- Condemnation: The Council members condemned the recent attack on Doha, which is the territory of a key mediator, on September 9.
- Regret: They expressed deep sorrow for the loss of civilian lives.
- De-escalation: Members stressed the importance of reducing tensions.
- Solidarity with Qatar: The Council showed its support for Qatar.
- Sovereignty: They underlined support for Qatar's national power and territory, in line with UN principles.
- Mediation Role: The Council recognized Qatar's important role in mediation efforts in the region, alongside Egypt and the United States.
- Priorities: Members underscored that releasing hostages (including those killed by Hamas) and ending the war and suffering in Gaza must be the top priorities.
- Diplomatic Efforts: They reiterated the importance of ongoing diplomatic work by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States.
- Call for Peace: The Council called on all parties to seize the chance for peace.
