A new agreement aims to stop the fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This area has seen thousands die and millions leave their homes this year because of the conflict. The DRC and the M23 rebel group signed a declaration in Qatar, with help from Qatar and the United States, who have been talking with both sides for months to reach a deal.
The agreement says both sides want to:
- Stop fighting for good.
- End all violence and attacks.
- Build trust by exchanging prisoners and people being held.
This declaration comes after another peace deal. In that deal, the DRC and Rwanda agreed to take their troops out of eastern DRC within 90 days.
A key part of the new agreement is that the DRC government will have control over all of its land. This is important for any country, no matter who is in charge.
The DRC has had problems for many years. The M23 rebel group, supported by Rwanda, took over two big cities in the eastern part of the country earlier this year, making things worse. The DRC has many minerals, which has caused fighting and forced people to leave their homes, leading to a big crisis.
This new declaration is a big step because, not long ago, the two sides did not want to talk. Now, they are talking, and mediators think a final peace deal could be signed soon.
The declaration of principles is a positive sign, but peace requires commitment from all sides. Can the DRC and M23 rebels truly put an end to the violence? Only time will tell if this agreement leads to lasting peace and stability in the region.
